Skills

Keep a shared list of skills and record each employee’s skills with proficiency and years of experience.

Skills record what people can do. Your organization keeps one shared list of skills, so “TypeScript” isn’t spelled three different ways. You then attach skills to employees with a proficiency level and years of experience.

Key concepts#

Skill
An entry in the organization’s shared list, with a name and an optional category such as “Engineering”. Names must be unique.
Employee skill
A skill attached to one person, with an optional proficiency (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced or Expert) and years of experience.

Who can use it#

Permissions

employee.viewemployee.view_sensitiveemployee.manage
Viewing the skill list and people’s skills needs employee.view. Adding skills to the list, and adding or removing them on an employee record, needs employee.manage. Employee records need employee.view_sensitive to open.

Build the skill list#

  1. Open the Skills tab

    Go to PeopleOrg structureSkills.
  2. Enter the skill

At the bottom, enter a Name (for example “TypeScript”) and optionally a Category (optional), such as “Engineering”.
  3. Click Add

The skill appears as a chip, with its category badge if it has one.

A skill with the same name as an existing one is refused. Skills can’t be renamed or deleted from the screen.

Add skills to a person#

  1. Open the employee record

Go to People, click the person, and find Skills.
  2. Choose the skill and level

Pick a Skill…, optionally a Proficiency… and the number of Years.
  3. Click Add

The skill appears as a chip, for example “TypeScript · Advanced · 4y”.
  • The skill dropdown lists only skills the person doesn’t already have. When they have every skill on the list, the form is hidden.
  • To remove a skill from someone, hover over its chip and click the ×. This doesn’t remove it from the shared list.
  • To change someone’s proficiency or years, remove the skill and add it again with the new values.

Project assignments

Employee records can also hold project assignments: a project, a role, an allocation percentage from 1 to 100, dates, and whether the work is billable. These are currently available only through the UnitX API. For planning who is working on what, and how much capacity they have, use Resources.

Limitations#

  • Employees can’t add skills to their own record. Someone who can manage employees has to.
  • There’s no screen for searching people by skill yet.

FAQ#

Why don’t I see the Skills section on a record?
If you can’t manage employees and the person has no skills recorded, the section is hidden.
It says a skill with that name already exists.
Skill names are unique across your organization. Use the existing skill instead of creating a duplicate.
