Comments and mentions

Discuss work on the work item itself, @mention colleagues who can see it, and attach files to your comments.

Comments keep the conversation about a piece of work on the work item itself, where the next person will find it. Mention a colleague with @ to bring them in, and attach files to a comment to share screenshots, exports and drafts in context.

Where comments appear#

Every work item page has a Comments section below Dependencies. Comments are listed oldest first, each with the author’s name (or “You”) and how long ago it was posted. The same commenting works on documents, goals and support tickets. Tickets add internal notes and public replies, covered in Support tickets.

Who can use it#

Permissions

comment.viewcomment.createcomment.edit
comment.view lets you read comments and comment.create lets you post them. Attaching files to your own comments needs comment.edit. Members have all three by default. Viewers can read comments but not post.

Post a comment#

  1. Open the work item

  2. Write your comment

Type into Add a comment…. Comments are plain text, up to 10,000 characters.

  3. Select Post

The comment appears straight away. If it can’t be saved, it’s removed from the thread, your text goes back into the box, and a message explains why.

Mention someone#

  1. Type @

A list of up to six people appears under the box. Keep typing to narrow it by name.

  2. Pick a person

Their name is inserted as @Name. Press Esc to close the list without choosing.

  3. Post the comment

The people you mentioned are notified. You can’t mention yourself.

Who can be mentioned#

The list only includes active members who can see the item you’re commenting on. You can’t use a mention to show someone work they don’t have access to. If you delete a name from the text before posting, that person isn’t notified.

Mentions arrive in the recipient’s Inbox and notifications, depending on their notification preferences. A link to a specific comment scrolls to it and highlights it.

Attach files to a comment#

  1. Post the comment first

Files attach to a comment that already exists. After you post, Attach appears under your comment.

  2. Select Attach and choose a file

The file uploads and appears as a chip under the comment. Attach more files the same way, one at a time.

  3. Open or remove an attachment

Anyone who can see the comment can select a file’s name to open or download it. The comment’s author can hover a file and select × to remove it.

Only the person who wrote a comment can add or remove its files. Uploaded files are stored in Files.

Replies, reactions, editing and resolving

On work items, comments form a single flat thread. Replying to a specific comment, emoji reactions, and editing or deleting a comment aren’t available on the work item page. On documents, comments can be resolved and reopened. See Documents.

Tips#

  • Put decisions in comments, not only in chat, so they stay with the work.
  • Mention the person you need something from, rather than posting and hoping they see it.
  • Use the description for the current state of the work, and comments for the discussion that got it there.

FAQ#

Why isn’t a colleague in the @ list?
They can’t see this work item, or they aren’t an active member. Only people with access to the item can be mentioned.
Why can’t I attach a file before posting?
Attachments belong to a posted comment. Post a short comment first (for example “Screenshot of the error”), then select Attach under it.
Can I edit a comment after posting it?
Not from the work item page. Post a follow-up comment with the correction.
Who is notified about a comment?
Everyone you mentioned. For what following or watching an item notifies you about, see Following and watching.
