Following and watching

Follow work items, documents, goals and tickets to hear about updates, and control automatic following.

Following something subscribes you to its comments and updates, so you are told when something happens instead of checking in case it did. You follow things automatically when you create them, are assigned them or comment on them, and you can follow anything else with one click. SettingsFollowing lists everything you follow and why.

What you can follow#

Work items, documents, goals and support tickets can be followed.

Following is not access

Following never lets you open something you couldn’t open already. If your role can’t see an item, following it tells you nothing, not even that something happened.

Who can use it#

Everyone, for themselves.

Permissions

organization.manage
Needed to change who gets followed automatically, for the whole organization.

Follow or unfollow something#

  1. Open the item

    For example, a document.

  2. Choose Follow

The button changes to Following and you’ll see “You will hear about updates”.

  3. Choose Following to stop

The button goes back to Follow: “You will stop hearing about this”.

Automatic following#

By default you start following something when you are:

  • whoever created it;
  • whoever it is assigned to;
  • anyone who comments on it.

Once you unfollow something, commenting on it again won’t resubscribe you. Only choosing Follow does.

See and manage what you follow#

Under What you follow in SettingsFollowing, each row shows the kind of item, a link to it, and why you follow it:

  • You followed this
  • You created it
  • Assigned to you
  • You commented

Choose Unfollow on any row. If the list is empty you’ll see “You are not following anything”.

Who gets followed automatically (administrators)#

The Who gets followed automatically section has one switch for each automatic rule: Whoever created it, Whoever it is assigned to and Anyone who comments on it. Rules still on their original setting are labelled default. Turning a rule off applies to everyone in the organization. Members without permission see the switches but can’t change them.

Teams watching an item#

A team can watch an item. Whoever is in the team at the time hears about it, so someone who joins the team later is included without anyone doing anything. Each person’s own notification preferences still decide how it reaches them.

Limitations#

  • Projects, conversations and customers can’t be followed yet.
  • Security and account notifications aren’t affected by following; they are about you, not an item.
  • Following and starring are separate. A star is a private bookmark with no notifications.

Frequently asked questions#

Why am I getting notifications about this?

Check Settings → Following. Every subscription shows the reason: you followed it, created it, were assigned it, or commented on it.

I was mentioned on something I follow. Do I get two notifications?

No. You get the mention, which is the more important of the two.
