Performance

Set performance goals, run formal reviews with per-criterion ratings, and leave feedback with the right visibility.

Performance in UnitX is three separate things on each employee record: performance goals the person works towards, formal performance reviews covering a period, and ad hoc feedback that isn’t tied to a review. Each has its own section and its own rules about who can write and read it.

Key concepts#

Performance goal
Something one person is working towards, optionally with a metric and a target (for example “Tickets closed”, target 100). Its status is active, completed or cancelled.
Performance review
A formal review of one person over a period, written by one named reviewer. It is made of items (a criterion with an optional rating and comments), plus an overall rating and a summary when submitted.
Feedback
A short note about someone, typed as praise, concern or general, with a visibility that decides who can read it.

Not the same as Goals and OKRs

Performance goals are about one person’s development and live on their employee record. They are separate from organization-wide Goals and OKRs in the main navigation.

Who can use it#

Permissions

employee.viewemployee.view_sensitiveemployee.self_serviceemployee.manage
All three sections are on the employee record, which needs employee.view_sensitive to open. Setting and updating your own goals needs employee.self_service. Adding a goal for someone else, creating a review and adding feedback on the record needs employee.manage. Only the reviewer named on a review can add items to it and submit it.

Performance goals#

Add a goal#

  1. Open the employee record

Go to People and click the person, or yourself.
  2. Fill in the goal

In Performance goals, enter a Title (for example “Ship the Q3 onboarding revamp”; up to 200 characters). Optionally add a Metric and a numeric Target.
  3. Click Add goal

The goal appears with an active badge.

You can add goals on your own record. To add goals on someone else’s record, you need employee.manage.

Track progress#

On your own record, each active goal has a Current value field. Enter the latest number and click Update. The goal line then reads, for example, “Tickets closed · target 100 · current 64”. When you’re done, click Mark complete, or Cancel if the goal no longer applies. Completed and cancelled goals can’t be changed from the screen.

Note

Progress controls appear only on your own record. Managers can add goals for their people but update them only through the person themselves.

Performance reviews#

Create a review#

  1. Open the employee record

Go to People and click the person being reviewed.
  2. Choose a reviewer and period

At the bottom of Performance reviews, pick the Reviewer (any active member of your organization), a Period start and a Period end. The end can’t be before the start.
  3. Click Create review

The review appears as a draft, listed by its period and reviewer.

Write and submit a review#

These steps are for the named reviewer.

  1. Expand the review

Open the person’s record and click the review’s period to expand it.
  2. Add items

For each thing you’re assessing, enter a Criterion (for example “Communication”), an optional Rating and optional Comments, then click Add item.
  3. Submit

Enter an optional Overall rating and Summary, then click Submit review. The review is now submitted and shows the overall rating and summary to everyone who can see it.

Submitting is final

A submitted review can’t be edited, and items can’t be added to it. Items can’t be edited or removed once added, even in a draft, so check each one before you click Add item.

Ratings have no fixed scale. Any whole number is accepted, so agree on a scale (for example 1–5) with your reviewers.

Feedback#

Add feedback#

  1. Open the employee record

Go to People and click the person.
  2. Write the note

In Feedback, type into “What’s the feedback?”.
  3. Pick a type and visibility

Choose a Type (praise, concern or general) and a Visibility (see below). Both are required.
  4. Click Add feedback

The note appears with its author, date, type and visibility.

Who can read feedback#

VisibilityWho can read it
PrivateYou (the author) and the person it’s about. Nobody else, not even an administrator.
ManagersThe author and the person, plus anyone above them in their reporting line and anyone who can manage employees (HR).
OrganizationAnyone who can view people.

The person a note is about can always read it. No visibility hides feedback from its subject.

Limitations#

  • There are no review cycles, templates or reminders. A review exists when someone creates it.
  • Feedback can’t be edited or deleted after it is added.
  • Goals, reviews and feedback don’t link to organization OKRs.

FAQ#

Why can’t I add items to a review?
Only the reviewer named on the review can add items and submit it, and only while it’s a draft. Ask whoever created the review to create a new one naming you, if that’s intended.
Why don’t I see the Performance reviews section on someone’s record?
If you can’t manage employees and the person has no reviews, the section is hidden.
Feedback I expected to see is missing.
Its visibility doesn’t include you. Private notes are for the author and the subject only; Managers notes are for the reporting line and HR.
