Notifications
The notification bell, what sends you a notification, and how notifications reach you in real time and by email.
Notifications tell you when something happens that concerns you: you are assigned work, mentioned, replied to, asked for an approval, or something you follow changes. They arrive in real time under the bell in the top bar and, depending on your preferences, by email.
The notification bell#
The bell icon in the top bar shows a red badge with your number of unread notifications, or 99+ when there are more. It updates the moment a notification is created, with no need to reload the page.
Open the bell
Choose the bell to see your 20 most recent notifications. Each shows a title, a short description and how long ago it happened (for example 5m ago). Unread ones have a dot.
Go to what it’s about
Choose a notification to mark it read and go straight to the thing it concerns. If that can’t be worked out, you are taken to your Inbox.
Tidy up
Mark all read clears the unread badge without removing anything. Clear archives the notifications in the list. When nothing is left you’ll see No notifications and “You’re all caught up.”
Who can use it#
Every member receives notifications and can manage their own.
Permissions
notification.viewnotification.manageYou are only notified about things you are allowed to see. If you lose access to something, notifications about it stop reaching you.

Security notices#
Some notifications are about your account itself: your password was changed, one of your sessions was ended, a security alert, or your organization’s single sign-on settings changed. These are always sent. They cannot be turned off by you or by your organization, and they are never held back by quiet hours.
Following#
Many notifications reach you because you follow something. You follow things automatically when you create them, are assigned them or comment on them, and you can follow anything else with the Follow button. If you are mentioned in a comment on something you follow, you get the mention and nothing else. See Following and watching.
Where notifications reach you#
- In app: under the bell and, for items that need you, in the Inbox. Written as part of the change that caused it, so it is there immediately.
- Email: sent shortly afterwards, as it happens or collected into an hourly, daily or weekly summary if you prefer.
The mobile app shows your notifications in its Inbox tab. Push notifications to a phone depend on your UnitX installation having a push provider set up. Only channels that can actually be delivered are offered in your settings.
Grouping#
When lots of things happen to one item in a short time, such as a burst of comments, UnitX summarizes them in one line so a busy thread doesn’t bury everything else. Each notification is still there to act on.
Controlling what you receive#
Choose which notifications reach you, on which channel and how often, and set quiet hours, under Settings → Notifications. Your organization can set defaults and fix some choices. See Notification preferences.
Notifications belong to an organization
The bell shows notifications for the organization you are working in. Switch organization to see the others. Your preferences are also set per organization.
Frequently asked questions#
Why did an email arrive later than the notification in the app?
The in-app notification is saved with the change itself; the email is sent afterwards, so a slow mail server can never stop your work being saved. If you chose a summary, the email waits for the next summary.
I turned email off and still got one.
It was either a security notice, a notification your organization has fixed on, or a critical notification during quiet hours. Settings → Notifications shows which rows are “Always sent” or set by your organization.
I cleared my notifications by mistake.
Clearing archives notifications rather than deleting what they point to. Anything that still needs you is still in your Inbox.
