Navigating UnitX

The sidebar, top bar, organization switcher, command palette, timer, notifications and keyboard shortcuts.

Every screen in UnitX sits inside the same frame: a sidebar on the left listing the areas you can open, and a top bar with the organization switcher, search, the timer, notifications, the theme toggle and your account menu. This page walks through each part so you always know where to look.

The sidebar lists the areas of UnitX. It is built from your own permissions, so it only shows what your role lets you open. An Organization Owner sees every entry; a Viewer sees far fewer. The entry for the page you are on is highlighted.

These entries are always there, whatever your role:

The rest appear when your role holds the permission shown. They are grouped here by area to make them easier to scan; in the sidebar they appear as a single list.

A missing entry is a permission, not a fault

If you open a link to an area your role doesn’t include, you see You don’t have access to this with the advice to ask an admin for the required permission. The permission keys are listed under Settings → Roles.

The top bar#

From left to right, the top bar holds:

Organization switcher#

The button at the top left shows the organization you are working in, for example Everyrealm. Open it to see every organization you belong to, listed under Workspaces, with a check mark beside the current one.

  1. Switch organization

Open the switcher and choose another organization. The whole app, including the sidebar, reloads for that organization and your role in it.

  2. Create or join another

Choose Create or join workspace to go to the setup screen, where you can create a new organization or continue to one you already belong to.

Search#

The Search… button opens the command palette, the same as pressing K. See Command palette below.

Timer#

If your role can log time (time_entry.create), the top bar has a Timer button. The timer runs on the server, so it keeps counting when you move between pages, reload, close the tab or lose your connection.

  1. Start a timer

Choose Timer, optionally describe What are you working on?, and choose Start. The button turns into a running clock.

  2. Pause, resume or stop

Open the running timer and choose Pause or Resume. Stop & log ends the timer and records a time entry. Discard throws the time away and records nothing.

You can only have one timer running at a time. If a timer has been going for many hours, it asks whether you are still working or forgot to stop it. See Time tracking.

Notification bell#

The bell shows a red badge with your number of unread notifications (99+ when there are more). It updates in real time. Open it to see your latest notifications, choose one to go straight to what it is about, or use Mark all read and Clear. See Notifications.

Theme toggle#

The sun or moon button switches between the light and dark themes. Your choice is remembered in this browser.

Account menu#

Your avatar or initials at the far right open the account menu. It shows your name and email address, and Log out signs you out of this browser. Your own account settings, such as password, two-factor authentication, notifications and language, are under Settings (see Your personal settings).

Command palette#

Press K on a Mac or CtrlK on Windows and Linux, from anywhere in the app. The palette does two things in one box:

  • Jump to: type part of an area name, such as “proj”, and press Enter to open it. Only areas your role can open are listed.
  • Search: from two characters onward, matching work items, documents and projects appear under Search results, and See all results for your term opens the full search page.

With an empty box, the palette offers your Recent searches. Use the arrow keys to move, Enter to open, and Esc to close. Full details are in Search and the command palette.

Keyboard shortcuts#

KeysWhat it does
K / CtrlKOpen or close the command palette
then EnterMove through palette results and open one
EscClose the palette, a dialog or a menu
Tab on page loadReveals a Skip to content link that jumps past the sidebar

Some screens add their own keys; for example, the work item table view supports arrow-key movement between cells. Those are described on the relevant pages.

Your personal settings#

Choose Settings in the sidebar. Alongside the organization tabs that administrators use, every member has these tabs for their own account:

On a phone or narrow window#

When the browser window is narrow, the sidebar is hidden. Tap the menu button (three lines) at the top left to open the same list of areas as a drawer; it closes when you choose an entry. The Search button shrinks to an icon. For a native experience, see the mobile app.

Frequently asked questions#

A colleague has a sidebar entry I don’t have. Why?

The sidebar is built from each person’s role. Their role includes a permission yours doesn’t. An administrator can change your role under Settings → Members, or adjust your role’s permissions under Settings → Roles.

The Timer button isn’t in my top bar.

It only appears for roles that can log time (time_entry.create).

I switched organization and my open page changed.

Everything in UnitX belongs to one organization, so switching shows the data and sidebar for the organization you chose.

Still stuck? Search the docs with ⌘K, open Help inside UnitX, or contact support.
